A CS2 pattern tier is a community ranking of how desirable a skin's paint seed is on a pattern-driven finish. The paint seed decides where the texture lands on the weapon, so two copies of the same skin can look very different and trade at very different prices. Tiers run from Tier 1, the most sought after, down through Tier 4, with BTA meaning better than average and Fake describing a seed that imitates a rarer variant. What is a CS2 pattern tier?

A pattern tier is a label traders use to rank how good a skin's paint seed is. Every CS2 skin gets a paint seed when it is created, an integer that decides how the finish is positioned on the weapon. On most skins that placement barely matters. On a handful of finishes it changes the look completely, and that is where tiers appear.

Tiers exist because the community needed a shorthand. Saying "Case Hardened pattern 387" means nothing to most people, while "Tier 1 blue gem" immediately communicates that the seed is among the best. The tier is a summary of the visual result, not a property stored on the item.

Why do some paint seeds sell for more than others?

Because supply is fixed and tiny. Only a few seeds produce a near perfect result, and there is no way to create more: the seed is locked in when the item is generated and can never be changed. A finish with a thousand possible seeds might have fewer than ten that traders consider top tier, spread across every copy in existence.

The premium can be enormous. On pattern-driven finishes, a top tier seed regularly trades for several times the price of an ordinary copy of the same skin at the same float value. This is why buyers check the seed before agreeing on a price, and why a screenshot is never enough to close a deal.

What do BTA, Tier 1 and Fake mean?

Tier 1 to Tier 4 rank a seed from best to merely notable. Tier 1 is reserved for the small group of seeds considered the finest examples of that finish, and each step down covers seeds that are still desirable but less complete. Anything below Tier 4 is usually just called a normal pattern and carries no premium.

BTA stands for better than average. It marks a seed that is clearly nicer than a typical copy without reaching a numbered tier, and traders use it as an honest middle ground: worth more than a random seed, not worth top tier money. You will also see rank labels such as Rank 1 or a numbered max, which point at one position in a published ranking rather than a broad band.

Fake is the label for a seed that imitates a rarer variant. A Doppler Phase 1 with the right seed can look almost like a Black Pearl, and a Phase 4 can pass for a Sapphire at a glance. The item is genuine and the finish is exactly what its name says, but the resemblance is coincidental. Calling it fake warns buyers that the price should follow the actual variant, not the one it resembles.

Are CS2 pattern tiers official?

No. Valve publishes no tier list and no ranking of seeds. Tiers are conventions built by the trading community over years, from shared screenshots, spreadsheets and forum threads, and they are refined as people examine more copies. Which CS2 finishes have pattern tiers?

Four families account for almost all tier discussion. Doppler and Gamma Doppler are ranked by phase and by how much of the best colour the seed reveals. Case Hardened is ranked by how much blue the pattern shows, the well known blue gems. Marble Fade is ranked by colour placement, with the Fire and Ice arrangement at the top. Fade is ranked by how complete the gradient is, expressed as a percentage.

Other finishes have famous seeds without a formal tier system, such as particular Crimson Web layouts. The principle is the same everywhere: the seed decides the image, and the market prices the image. If a finish looks noticeably different from one copy to the next, someone has ranked it.

    Turn the model around and check both sides. Many tiers depend on the playside, the backside, or both, and a seed that looks perfect from one angle can be ordinary from the other.
